Intersectionality

Intersectionality is a unique term and a sociological theory that was first introduced by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, the American civil rights advocate.  By definition, intersectionality refers to the complicated way in which multiple forms of discrimination based on various categories including race, gender and social class (racism, sexism, and classism) combined all together, overlapping and intersecting, affecting a certain individual and/or a group of people. In the local context, late 20’s females that are still not married are literally called spinster or “3anes” in Egypt.  For me, this is a sexiest stereotype and definitely an unacceptable and disrespectful form of intersectionality that tackles all Egyptian (race) females (gender) who are in their mid or late twenties and still unmarried (class). Speaking from an Egyptian female perspective, I really don’t appreciate being perceived that way or labeled “spinster” or “3anes” just because I didn’t find my partner yet…
